A century ago our nation was famous around the world for creating beautiful cities. Now, we are known for failing cities. In a recent 60 Minutes report Bob Simon noted that after he left what passes for sparks of new life in downtown, the rest of Detroit reminded him of Mogadishu the worst place Ive ever been.
A failing city, we have at least 25, is one that can never expect to return to its former prosperity. Soon Detroits population will be one third of what it was in 1960 there is no chance it will ever boast two million again. While Detroits problems are specific in their particulars, cities like Baltimore, Cleveland, Toledo, Scranton and Hartford share histories of similar policy choices that drove their continuous downward spiral.
I recently asked students to determine the best year in the histories of various failing cities. They considered economic growth, immigration, infant mortality, debt capacity, school performance, traffic and parks. Less obvious factors such as a citys commitment to beautification and its historic success in capturing a unique industrial role in supplying the nations marketplace also were weighed.
They decided that Buffalos civic apogee was 1901. Its industry was diverse. It received much of the Midwests grain in its port, milled it, and transshipped it by rail for export. Pittsburghs best year was 1910; Rochesters, 1928; Philadelphias, 1929; Detroits, 1950; and Garys, 1953.

Interesting how the failures all began with the start of the Progressive era.
Answer: LIBERALISM.
DEMOCRATS
No, I had better not say that word.
Democrats.
Because 80% of the nation’s wealth is held by 1 or 2 percent of the people. They seem to be working with the Federal Reserve and the Progressives to act as a money sink so the Fed can create new money without allowing it to reach the people and cause inflation. This creates unnecessary debt to push the nation off the cliff. Even when the bubble implodes, they will still be very wealthy but the rest of us will become wards of the state.
They do have one major thing in common...
Yes, the answer is staring them in the face,
but when you have as an _assumption_ that “liberalism”, ie, the political expression of Humanism, is the road to Utopia,
it’s impossible to see that it is the cause of dystopia.
That’s the thing with assumptions and worldviews - it’s really hard to step outside of them and question whether they are right, because your judgement of what IS right is based on those assumptions.
It’s all those commie ‘RAT “poverty programs” they rely upon to keep them afloat.
Diversity.
We lowered the import tariffs which resulted in off-shoring our manufacturing.
A lot of cities that depended on that manufacturing were devastated.
Indeed - if people would quit complaining and work at trying to solve the problems, we might get something done.
Easy answer. Look who have been running those cities for the last 25 years.
What/When has all of the city’s Demographics changed(IE when did Blacks and Mexicans start to outnumber whites?) AND when did each city begin to “elect” “Minority” “Leadership”?
They all have huge populations of stupid dependent minorities who can’t find enough intelligence among them to combine to have a community IQ in the double digits. And they are paid to reproduce like bunnies. Could anything be more stupid that this policy?
No red town has failed.
Stealing.
For the policy to be stupid, it would have to have as its real goal something other than what reality is producing.
What if the real goal is exactly what it is producing,
and the stated goals are just a farce?
