I don’t get what “he threw us to the briar patch” means.

I guess you've never been hiking and seen a plant that has vines with very sharp thorns. We had them on the farm, and that was one place you didn't want a horse to buck and throw you into. Best hangout for rabbits though. Coyotes and other predators would leave the rabbits alone. BTW, welcome to FR.

Uh ... congress was hated long before Ted Cruz came along.

Thanks 2ndDivisionVet. Demagogic Party-line shill Richard Reeves:
Perhaps those tea party guys are smarter than they look. After all, these men and women in Congress came to Washington determined to cripple big government -- or even destroy it... Now, with a minimum of sabotage, millions and millions of Americans, Republicans and Democrats alike, share their hatred of Washington... Isn't that what the tea party provocateurs want? They hate government, and they want you to hate it, too. Anti-government populism has always been a thread in the fabric of American life. Until the tea party nihilists, the latest manifestation had been President Reagan's inaugural address, when he repeated his old line, "Government is not the solution; it's the problem." Despite his rhetoric, Reagan never governed as if he believed that crap. He was a compromiser when he had to be, he understood what "loyal opposition" meant and, like most politicians, he was not really against the government or big government. He just wanted big government that did what he wanted it to do...
I would have started this with "barf alert", but I hate spoilers.

President Reagan's inaugural address, when he repeated his old line, "Government is not the solution; it's the problem."

It's an "old line" now because he said it 30 years ago.

It was pretty fresh at the time.

So what’s number one in the talking points today? Nihilists? Anarchists? Confederates?

Hey Richard Cranium, here's a dollar. Now go buy a clue.

The Founders would have been appalled at the degree of government control of our lives, and the massive debt that it has racked up.

Oh, they’re good. They can roll all three into one. I’ve seen it.

To a socialist liberal: “liberty or death” = “nihilism”.

Wow. I forgot about the Tar Baby. Perfect analogy. I’m starting to think we should not post comments on the Net anymore. Everything we say they take it and twist it around to their own ends, with the help of the media. We’re just giving them ideas.

I couldn’t see a different one, given the consequences of not creating a deal. I didn’t read everything on it but I read a lot.

such a charge is Kafkaesque

Or Through the Looking-Glass.

As a famous shrink once said, the reason people go crazy is that their parenting figure altered reality in order to portray them as wrong. They are stuck not only with always believing they are wrong, but with a separation from reality.

"Washington has become a huge, loveless, self promoting prideful ego fest."

And those are its' good traits.

Most of the hiking I do is in the mountains of New Hampshire. No briar patches there that I’m aware of. But thanks for the explanation and the welcome! Best regards!

I thought most of the ‘consequences’ was just fear mongering by the liberals. I guess I’m just frustrated. Feels like nothing is going our way.

Yes, it was fearmongering. But fear can cause financial turmoil. That would have been jolly fun for all, especially the Dems, who could then have been able to pin “world financial crisis” on the GOP along with every other manufactured evil.
