14 Caribbean nations sue Britain, Holland and France for slavery reparations…

Posted on 10/10/2013 9:18:04 AM PDT by Olog-hai

Britain is being sued, with France and the Netherlands, by 14 Caribbean countries, which are demanding what could be hundreds of billions of pounds in reparations for slavery.

Around 175 years after Britain freed its last slaves in the West Indies, an alliance of Caribbean nations is demanding to be repaid for the “awful” lingering legacy of the Atlantic slave trade.

Caricom, a group of 12 former British colonies together with the former French colony Haiti and the Dutch-held Suriname, believes the European governments should pay—and the UK in particular. It has hired the British law firm Leigh Day, which recently won compensation for hundreds of Kenyans tortured by the British colonial government during the Mau Mau rebellion of the 1950s. …

no, no, no....this is legitimate, same as here in the US. Every former slave owner should have to pay into a fund that will be used to compenstae every former slave.

You are correct. Many times more slaves went to Central and South American than did to North America.

And a secondary point, all of Europe and the Americas didn't import near the number of African slaves muslim Arabia did.

Yet there are few blacks in Saudi Arabia.

The muslim arabs preferred their slaved castrated!

(This is a fun fact to share with any NOI type you happen to talk to)

I could not find out in the article who the 12 countries were.
However, most of the problems in the poorer Caribbean countries are because of their government in the last 100 years.
When I was in the British Virgin Islands and Caymans I met many slave descendants that were very wealthy. In fact in the BVI’s I met some that owned their own island. I still remember a young black man pumping my gas at the station his dad owned. He was wearing a Rolex watch. His family also owned a car rental agency and the grocery store. Generally in the BVI’s, all the original slave descendants were all wealthy unless they were lazy drunks.

Well that explains the lack of black population after these hundreds of years. Very sad and why isn't Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton over there marching?
Answer, no money to be made that they would be putting themselves at risk for once.

The UK should respond with a an ultimatum - drop the law suit or we declare war - good old fashioned, WWII type war.

I wonder if, sooner or later, crap like this will cause a war? I hope not, but I just wonder.

I think they should pay them a lump sum and then stop all foreign aid, bar them from ever entering the donor countries and deport the rest.

It’s a little unclear from the article (or my reading comprehension has taken another hit from lack of coffee) but exactly where is this suit taking place? In an EU court? I ask because it appears to be one of those “go for the deep pockets” lawsuits - note nobody is suing Spain - and those of the U.S. are deeper than most. Empty, but deep.

enough already with playing the victim

For centuries, Britain did a decent job running their Caribbean islands. The two I saw on a cruise....Barbados and Grand Turk....are really messing things up with independence. If they want Britain, Holland and France to keep subsidizing them, maybe they should become colonies again.

Really, the descendents of slaves should be paying these European countries back for bringing their ancestors to freedom for the descendents.

They’re bringing this suit to the UN’s so-called International Court of Justice. (Had to read the Al Jazeera article to find that out.)

Ah, thank you. Which court, I suspect, has no standing to levy anything but a recommendation.

It does become clear why the proggies are so intent on having the U.S. sign into this sort of program. It's a redistributionist's wet dream.

yes, but they could be suing oil-rich, Arab countries. I wonder what kind of a response they’d get from the Saudis.

No one alive has experienced slavery

We in America are going back to it with giant government and forced taxation for things we don't need or want. There is even a 3.5% tax coming on the sales of all homes through Obamacare.

And also charge for education costs and healthcare provided, plus a surcharge for defense. Which should leave all of them OWING Europe. Call it a “civilization fee”. . .
