A mother has hit out at her daughter's school after the athletic teen was sent home with a letter saying she was 'overweight'.
Lilly Grasso, all 55, 124 pounds of her, is nowhere near overweight and is a healthy, active teenager.
But Naples (FL) Middle School sent a letter to her home warning of the dangers of obesity, according to her mother Kristen Grasso.
Lily is tall, athletic, solid muscle -- by no means is she overweight, the concerned mother told WFTX before showing a refrigerator stocked with healthy foods.
The letter, sent after a health screening by the Collier County Health Department, cited her body mass index (BMI) as the reason shes considered obese. These notices have been derisively referred to across the country as fat letters.
A baffled Kristen Grasso was at odds with the message being sent to young girls when a healthy child is being labeled as fat, she told the station.
'My concern is kids that see the results of this test that may be classified as overweight that arent, and the self-esteem issues that they may get, she explained.
The middle school volleyball player has a BMI of 22, which resulted in her being labeled as overweight by the county health department, according to the letter.
The upset mother pointed out that a girl her age and size has a BMI of 20.8, which is healthy weight, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
The letter also lists the girl as being two inches shorter than she currently is, according to the Orlando Sentinel, which makes the BMI calculation performed by the school wholly inaccurate.

Flori-duh (and 19 other states) Nanny State PING!
Sixty years ago my mom got sent home with a letter from an officious school nurse claiming that she was suffering from “malnutrition”.
My red-haired Irish grandmother stormed her way into that school and gave them what-for. I don’t think they ever sent such a letter home with a child again.
TTIWWP?.................
BMI is a hack way to say a child is obese. The school does not know what it is doing.
They use BMI, Body Mass Index, which is a flawed concept...................
She’s a little young for you.
Way back in 1976 or so, when I was in the Marine Corps, a young corporal in my company got put on the ‘Fat Body’ platoon because his BMI said he was overweight. He was short, about 5’4” and was a karate instructor and a body builder, solid muscle................
What about Mom?..............
So...why are they measuring the girl’s height and weight in any case? Are they buying her some new clothes?
This exactly the kind of thing that could trigger anorexia and bulimia in young girls. My youngest daughter is like the girl in the story, tall and athletic and she’s always saying she thinks she’s fat because she weighs more than her friends and we have to keep telling her she’s not and that she’s lucky to be a tall girl.
If someone at her school were to do something like this people would be losing their jobs. But then again this is just one more reason my kids don’t go to public schools.
5 foot 5, 124 pounds is actually thin. How can anyone consider that overweight? I’m looking at the charts and it’s on the small side.
The mom should send the daughter back with fat letters about the overweight school administrators.
Ma’s OK, I guess. Follow the link and behold . . .
And overpaid.
For an 11 year old, that’s pretty big.
BMI is bogus. I’d like to see the stats on the teachers and staff.
