The foreign minister of the Netherlands said Friday he is seeking to obtain via diplomatic channels the release of Greenpeace activists who were charged with piracy by Russia after the environmental group protested at an oil platform in the Arctic Sea.
Two Canadians Alexandre Paul of Montreal and Paul Ruzycki of Port Colborne, Ont. are among those facing the piracy charge, which can result in a 15-year prison sentence upon conviction.
Frans Timmermans, the Dutch foreign minister, also said Friday he will file suit to recover the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise, which was seized by the Russian government after the protest. "I feel responsible for the ship and its crew because it's a ship that sails under the Dutch flag," he told reporters in The Hague, Netherlands.
Timmermans said he would file an arbitration suit at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, based in Hamburg, Germany, because it wasn't clear to him whether the ship's seizure was legal. Greenpeace International, which is based in Amsterdam, denies any wrongdoing and describes the charges as absurd.

It’s unsettling that I find myself cheering for the Russians again and again lately.
if the ship is scuttled as a pirate vessel it can not be returned.
The cost of the scuttling operation can then be billed to the vessel flag nation that promotes piracy
Why? You're cheering for rule of law over privilege of connections to bully DemoRat Socialists.
The Greenpeace criminals should do their time, they did the crime, whether or not it is in a Russian prison.
Good heavens, they’re Canadians! The law and order bunch.
Correct, pirate ports are subject to sanction.
The Russians are doing everyone a favor. The greenspeace “activists” are insufferable LIB criminals.
With all the insanity going on these days, it is so refreshing to hear good news such as this. How much you wanna bet Greenpeace won’t be messing around in Russian waters for awhile?
Way to set (yet another) example, Russians!
send them to siberia
Yep they are, and they are also the new face of the Communist criminal. Environmentalists/animal rights "activists" are actually Communists seeking to seize or control private property over fraudulent "environmental" concerns with fabricated occurrences and fabricated "evidence".
Watermelons, green outside, red inside.
Bomb the Netherlands!
Yep, all dem enviromentablists should be allowed to enjoy the pristine nature of Siberia and live in harmony with polar bears and foxes.
Putin molodets!
I hope Russia scuddles the ship and keep these wackos in jail for a while...
Huh? You mean the Russkies don't give the death penalty for piracy?!?
That does seem odd. Maybe we should check with Whoopie Goldberg -- she'd probably say it wasn't "piracy-piracy", it was just some kids having fun. /s
Russia needs to tell the Netherlands to butt out.
There were Dutch pirates in the old days, too. (and English pirates and American pirates and Moorish pirates....)
Hanging from the yardarm lowers the recidivism rate.
Send them to The Lubyanka.
