Ford used to have its own Scientific Research Labs to study areas of interest to vehicles and their manufacture, use and recycling.

some of the things that allowed the efficiencies of this plant originated in laboratories and scientists doing work on the government’s dime," he said.

Not his government and not his dime. His government is EPA, Social Security and Medicare -- the government that used to do good stuff was ARPA, NASA and the AEC.

Governments only build bureaucracies. Private industry built the roads and the infrastructure. All government provided was taxpayer money.

Everything from the assembly line to automobile financing came from the mind of one man... Mr. Ford.
This dufus thinks the auto industry came from gov’t grants to Bell labs.. what a jerk

One of the problems with having a president who is not an American is that the clown has no knowledge of American history or how America works.

There’s no position at Ford - to include floorsweep - that the Obamadork would qualify for.

Yes, he’s that incompetent.

Glad there’s politics for the ungifted in our country.

There is nothing like visiting a plant and insulting them.

He should go to GM and give this speech, they are the ones who took Government money Ford didn’t.

Obama carefully gives credit to the private sector, but he argues that government is essential to this process.

Mussolini handled things this way in Italy. It's called Fascism.

A dictionary definism of fascism is ...

"a government system with strong centralized power, permitting no opposition or criticism, controlling all affairs of the nation (industrial, commercial, etc.), emphasizing an aggressive nationalism."

Wasn't it Mussolini that was ultimately hung by his heels?

Chrysler and General Motors required a government bailout during the 2008 crisis, but Obama said that Ford would have been hurt as well if their competitors went bankrupt.

Obama is so business savvy with all his experience and such. Your business suffers when your competition goes out of business? Then why does the government step in on monopoly cases when businesses start to make too much money for lack of competition?

I expect that a good portion of Ford's recent success is exactly that the government is now holding GM (for sure) and Chrysler (to an extent) back.

BTW - Does Daimler still own Chrysler?

“If we’re going to have scientific research and development -— I was looking at all these newfangled pieces of equipment here -— some of the things that allowed the efficiencies of this plant originated in laboratories and scientists doing work on the government’s dime,” he said. “That’s how we always maintain our cutting edge.”

OK moron, name one piece of equipment in that factory that was developed by government lackeys! I dare you! I double dog dare you!

You can’t!

To the extent that private firms always have their hands out to the government to fund their research (or other things), he is not wrong.

So what is behind the greatness of the American economy? Obama carefully gives credit to the private sector, but he argues that government is essential to this process.

In and of itself, this argument is absolutely correct. Without government, the private sector as we know it cannot function.

Capitalism is absolutely dependent on a legal system to enforce contracts, provide a reasonably safe environment in which to function, etc.

Unfortunately, the fact that government is necessary for business to function leads idiots to believe anything governments might do will help the economy.
