Poverty in N.J. reaches 52-year high, new report shows [Heckuva Job, Christie]

Poverty in New Jersey continued to grow even as the national recession lifted, reaching a 52-year high in 2011, according to a report released today.

The annual survey by Legal Services of New Jersey found 24.7 percent of the state’s population — 2.1 million residents — was considered poor in 2011. That’s a jump of more than 80,000 people — nearly 1 percent higher than the previous year and 3.8 percent more than pre-recession levels.

"This is not just a one-year or five-year or 10-year variation," said Melville D. Miller Jr., the president of LSNJ, which gives free legal help to low-income residents in civil cases. "This is the worst that it’s been since the 1960 Census."

And it may get worse: The report warned Census figures for 2012 to be released this month may be higher.

Yeah, and likely all of them are in Newark, Paterson, or Camden. Inner city dumps no better than anywhere else.

Full of Dem voters, always been dumps. Always will be. Doesn’t matter who the government is. Besides, Camden is really part of Philly anyway.

The “recession” may have lifted.

But the stagnation, rot and decline continue.

The recession is not nearly as bad here as it is in other places in the country. Very few homes for sale. Jobs are picking up. New cars selling like hot cakes.

It just depends where you are and it’s very different depending on that. (even sometimes within the same county)

I am convinced that the people in joisey in general like the fact that they have these 3rd world cities close by. Gives them an excuse to act morally superior when they’re just dumb liberals! When called on their BS, they just say how things could be worse...go to Newark, et al!

Seems to be the popular theme in NJ. If you’ve got a weak record at your previous job, run for higher office.

Mayor Booker of Newark is showing him how to do it.

I think they’re just preparing their attack lines...er...talking points, if Christie decides to run for the presidency in 2016.

Destroying billions overnight in real estate, with the resulting loss of tax base as well as the delay in rebuilding all contribute. Too anomalous.
