Western Maryland secessionists seek to sever ties with the liberal Free State
Washington Post ^ | 9/9/13 | Michael Rosenwald

The push by 50 western Virginia counties to secede in 1863, forming West Virginia at the height of the Civil War, was led by a charismatic store-clerk-turned-lawyer who famously urged his supporters: “Cut the knot now! Cut it now! Apply the knife.”

West Virginia was the last state to break off from another. Now, 150 years later, a 49-year-old information technology consultant wants to apply the knife to Maryland’s five western counties. “The people are the sovereign,” says Scott Strzelczyk, leader of the fledgling Western Maryland Initiative, and the western sovereigns are fed up with Annapolis’s liberal majority, elected by the state’s other sovereigns.

Comments at the end of the article are interesting.

There was a comment that read "Why should we wreck our system of government to appease a few hillbillies?"

I am sure King Geo. III uttered those same words...

Many of the people we know who are leaving don’t have time to wait for a political awakening that may not happen in their lifetimes. Others are just sick and tired of the high taxes and excessive regulations that are killing their businesses.

The liberals are destroying the state just like they have done in their other strongholds. Why would Maryland be any different?

Rightly or wrongly, there is a widespread sense of resignation that things are not going to get better and that opportunities for a better life lie elsewhere (e.g., southern states).

Regards and best of luck.

It figures that they would mock people who can fix their own cars and shoot their own food.

The state is so narrow at one point that if everybody jumped it would probably break into two pieces ...

No way would Congress make them into a state, but with the permission of the state and federal governments they might be able to join Pennsylvania or West Virginia.

But the problem with these things is that most of the tax money comes from the suburban areas, so that taxes may actually go up for Western Marylanders if the state is broken up.

FWIW, The colonial charter defined the colony's borders before the land had been very well explored. Depending on which branch of the Potomac one considered, Maryland could have had a very different shape.

Don’t forget rural northern Maryland along with The Eastern Shore.
Stop the Jerrymandering. We have nothing in common with Baltimore City and DC.

Howard county west of western Baltimore county was solid Republican up till early 2000s , Kerry won in 2004 was the start of Dem rule. This is due to housing development, immigration and massive invasion.

And they are still wiping out multiple forests to build many more house developments here. Traffic is hell, schools crowded, taxes go up and up.

Columbia is about as socialist as Takoma Park. The Rouse left-overs pushed low-income housing into the area through the 90's and beyond so that the takers could take from the makers. Elkridge used to be nice... now in decline. It's a mess.

Damn near everyone I know is moving out of Maryland when they retire. I have 6.5 years left... unfortunately. I told my kids that I had some advice for them... 1) learn to cook. 2) learn to fix your own car. 3) exercise your second amendment rights. 4) move to a red state.

Let the Eastern Shore join Delaware and let Delaware give Wilmington/New Castle County to Maryland as compensation.

Yes, the Delmarva peninsula joins with Virginia, except that Northern Virginia has to go with Baltimore City and County, Montgomery County and Prince George's County. That will now be the State of Marnova. Or Nomarwashing.

That's why they should join a larger state --WV or PA -- instead of going it alone.

Like your new proposed state names. However, in this case the "State of Morons" would be easier to spell and more appropriate.

As a Northern Virginian, somehow I don’t like this aspect of the plan. We’re nowhere near as bad as Montgomery/PG/Balto.
