Colts waive player after weekend arrest ("You can't arrest me, I'm a Colts player")

The Indianapolis Colts say they have waived rookie safety John Boyett from the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list.  Boyett was recently in the Marion County jail for resisting law enforcement, public intoxication and disorderly conduct after an incident at a downtown Indianapolis bar on Labor Day.

Marion County Jail records indicate Boyett was jailed at 2:52 a.m. Monday.  He has since posted bond.

According to an IMPD report, an officer working at Tiki Bob's, 231 S. Meridian, was told by an employee of the business that an intoxicated male, later identified as Boyett, was being refused entry by employees. The male was said to have "cussed at patrons of the bar and people on the sidewalk." The report says the male left before officers arrived.

Later, police encountered Boyett when employees say he returned to the bar.

An officer tried to arrest Boyett, but police say he pulled from the officer's grasp, "threw a stiff arm toward me, and the fled on foot northbound on Meridian Street".

The report says officers gave chase and caught Boyett in an alley. When asked to identify himself, police say Boyett kept repeating "you can't arrest me, I'm a Colts player."

He also threatened an officer, according to the report, saying he would "come back and break your jaw."

He's now charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Boyett is from Napa, California. He played college football at Oregon. He was selected by the Colts in the sixth round (192^nd overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He is currently on the Colts reserve/non-football injury list. He did not practice or play in the preseason.

But, how can the Colts keep up with the new NFL and AFL policy of “Our team has more and mo-bad felons than your team has”?

We need more sports teams to do this. If every athlete had genuine concern for their jobs for terrorizing society, we might get better behaved athletes.

We’ve seen variations of this for a long time with celebrities, entertainers, etc and often takes the form or essence of “Do you know who I am?” It usually doesn’t impress as intended but it gives you an idea of how athletes have been coddled in life and has warped their perspective.

Agreed. Because I strongly believe people deserve second chances, I hope he gets one, but I also hope that he learns a very strong lesson from this, not the least of which is that those inhibitions one has, that alcohol suppresses, are there for a reason. If I were advising him I would advise him to say that he drank too much, made an unforgivable error in judgment, understands entirely why the Colts did what they did, and pledge that no matter what he will never make that mistake again. If he's contrite, maybe someone will give him a chance.

I have never understood why anybody thinks the "Do you know who I am" line will play well with any police officer. Has playing that card every worked for anybody? If I was a police officer and somebody pulled that on me, it would make me angry and even more determined to pull out all the stops to take that down a peg or two.

A little humility in those situations go a long way. If you are a celebrity, chances are the officers will cut you slack if you are polite and humble. And if you really are somebody famous, the officer will know that - you don't have to tell them.

That remorse will occur only if he never gets another shot at the NFL and ends up in the arena league or CFL.

It will not happen at all if another NFL team gives him a shot next year as an UFA and he makes a team.

I wouldn’t be too complimentary of the Colts organization over this incident. Remember, this was a rookie who had never played a down for the team and probably was not counted on to play a significant role. If it had been someone like Andrew Luck involved, for instance, I don’t think the Colts would have been so quick to cut him. (Not that I’m implying that Luck would ever do something like this, just using him as an example of a prominent player who likely would have been treated differently by the team)
