Climate change, ticks claiming moose
Concord Monitor ^ | July 28, 2013 | By ANNMARIE TIMMINS

In 1950, New Hampshire was home to just 50 moose. Today, the count is near 5,000, but state biologists fear that climate change – by way of winter ticks and other parasites – is threatening the herd.

“Shorter winters are a problem for moose because they give ticks a leg up,” said Kristine Rines-Wanker, moose project leader for the state Fish and Game Department. “People have to recognize that the (climate) changes we are facing are not just changes in the Arctic. It’s not just polar bears that are going to be affected.”

Hoping to get a better handle on the problem, the Executive Council last week approved a four-year, $695,000 study of the state’s moose population.

A study can identify the threat to the moose population but not necessarily stop it, Rines-Wanker said. “It’s hard to convince people of the larger problem” of climate change, she said.

People can tackle climate change or “pray for snow,” she said.

Ticks are small arachnids, not bugs

I don’t know, but I’ll ask.Darn ticks are aggresive too,I use a repellant with 100% DEET and stil pick up ticks in the woods.I’ve even removed ticks from our cats this year and they mostly hang out around the barn.

There are thousands of species of ticks and I am well aware of them. Some have three stage life cycles, and others five. Ticks live almost six years but they must survive by feeding on others, reptilian, avian, or mammalian. The fact some survive the winter better than others doesn’t make them Winter ticks IMO. In my entomology studies, I never came across a tick that thrived in cold areas, they are insects and winter attached to a warm blooded animal. Just call me skeptical unless someone can show me a tick that survives well in temperatures below freezing.

So the moose population might be decreasing maybe because of more ticks that could be caused by the completely bogus Global Warming which has now been relabeled Climate Change?!

What drivel.

Here's the bottom line: Hoping to get a better handle on the problem, the Executive Council last week approved a four-year, $695,000 study of the state’s moose population.

It's all about taxpayers' money.

What annoys me is that they selectively pick a time when the population was “x” and then say we should have that many....like nothing has changed. Their whole concept of maintaining a species is ridiculous and self serving.

Yes, fear. So much for statement of hypothesis, design of experiment, data collection, analysis, and careful reporting of results.

When scientists become advocates, science goes out the window, and they are left with fear.

“It was only 55 degrees in northern Illinois this morning.

What warming?”

Say now... wouldn’t that be called “an inconvenient truth”?

The forced banishment of man made insecticides and their use has caused a population explosion in all manner of people eating critters. Mosquitos in the South are a real problem... deer flies and blood flies and green head flies. The epa no longer allows aerial spraying or trucks that spray neighborhoods directly. They killed DDT and look what happened! They killed off chlordane and fire ants rule now.

“A tick bit my sister moose once.”

Bravo...well done. I also understand that Turkeys keep down the tick population. From my perspective, enough Wild Turkey solves both of my personal tick and moose problems, however I tend to watch more cat videos while eating cheezburgers.

Dang...my beeber just stunned me
