The driver of a speeding train that crashed in northwestern Spain on Wednesday night, killing 78 people, has refused to respond to police questioning on Friday, a police spokesman told AFP.

“The driver has refused to answer the police authorities,” said the spokesman, adding that the case will now “proceed to a judicial process as soon as possible.”

Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, 52, who has remained in hospital under police supervision since the crash, was formally detained by police on Thursday night accused of criminal recklessness, according to the head of the Galician police service Jaime Iglesias.

The train was said to have been travelling at more than twice the 80 kilometres per hour speed limit when it came off the rails four kilometres from the city’s main station and slammed into a concrete wall on the side of the track.

Amo, while still trapped in his cab, reportedly told railway officials by radio that the train had been travelling at 190 kilometres (118 miles) per hour.

I think they were secretly most pleased when the oil was transporting itself into the Kalamazoo.

I heard somewhere that he had been driving trains for 30 years. I wonder if he was drunk or stoned to have screwed up so badly.

Lawyer up, claim you’re a democrat. You don’t remember. What difference does it make? You’ll get off.

The recent bunch of arrestees look like some real winners. I’m glad to see they were charged with felony obstruction.

I dunno, the photos aren't enough to tell--I think two of the women would clean up nicely and score well on the "hot and crazy" scale. Unfortunately, they're really crazy.

Refused to answer? Or too drunk or stoned to answer? I highly suspect his bloodstream was full of illegal substances.

I’m confused. This isn’t the protest in Marshall where the guy skateboarded into the pipeline? I thought the site they did this was in Fredonia Township....

So this is a different protest. Gotcha. But I don’t think it was near Kalamazoo, the city. Probably not far from Kalamazoo, the river however. (My old home town, CC. Near Albion, yours.)

However, thanks to the KTVU station in Oakland we were able to learn the name of the train's conductor, it is Serge Tufast.

(With special thanks to a fool who watches this station, uh, religiously.)

The National Transportation Safety Board named. Que Demasiado Rápido (52) of Madrid as the engineer in the crash.

Even if the Muslim terrorists weren’t involved in this train wreck, think of the possibilities of inexpensive mass casualties by terrorists sabotaging high speed train systems. Thousands of miles of unprotected tracks and equipment.

I have to issue a retraction. It was his BROTHER Hugo Tufast who was really to blame.

Yes, the possibly for terrorist targeting makes California’s high speed rail system a real bad idea.

We have EVERY passenger on a flight get personally inspected to prevent calamity. Trains will remain a soft target.

Additionally, the left is against pipelines and other things that cut through large patches of untouched land. Yet they love them some commuter rails.
