Researchers at NASA’s Texas-based Johnson Space Center are trying to prove that it is possible to travel faster than the speed of light, and hope to one day build an engine that resembles the fictional Starship Enterprise.

NASA physicist and engineer Dr. Harold G. White, 43, believes it is possible to bend the rules of time and space that Albert Einstein constructed when he postulated that it is impossible to exceed the speed of light.

White's research is based on the theories of Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre, who in 1994 theorized that exceeding Einstein’s galactic speed limit was possible if scientists discovered a way to harness the expansion and contraction of space. And Harold and his team are trying to do just that.

It actually is a small step, the headline is just lying. Right now they’re just researching the possibility of compressing space, which is the first of many many steps to “real” warp.

before such an engine is practical, we will have to understand what the issues, the real life HUMAN issues of traveling faster than light will be, and how we will deal with them

I imagine we humans will develop such an engine, someday, but it will be used only for transporting “robotic” “passengers”/equipment and probes at first, and for testing “live” faster-than light travel on non-human life, including possibly our lower primate friends (chimps??) again, before humans themselves travel “faster than light”.

When tasked to explain it to someone I use a different approach, referencing the three variable epxressions of dimension Time as related/connected to the three variable epxressions of dimension Space. It all got started when Time was a non-variable (moment) and Space was a non-variable (point). Things get complicated soon thereafter ... inflation happened before matter existed, but when matter aapeared, Time of the background took over the Time contained in the matter.

First they have to get the kinks out of creating flying carpets. Can't send Muslims until you have a flying carpet always pointing to Mecca. And of course they won't go anywhere or build anything, until infidels build all the infrastructure for them, and then the Muslims will kill the infidels and burn everything - so why bother?

A credible source once told me 100 years ahead... and then gave me a skunk patch from his time there (as a “morale” patch for my flight suit). I believed him. (Because of his position, not the patch!) This was about ten years ago.
