I think this is a very astute analysis. The whole thing is a tragedy but TM may have assumed Zimmerman was a pervert and decided to beat him up. Maybe seeing the gun, he still thought Zimmerman was a predator who was also armed.
Doesn’t excuse his behavior or make Zimmerman guilty, but it does explain things.

I think the conversation happened as a joke and TM decided to show off to this moron Jeantel and let her hear him give GZ a beat down thats why he laid his phone down while she was still on the other end listening.
