Thank-you great American patriots for making the USA possible.

Thanks BunnySlippers.
Images of Americans who fought in the Revolution are exceptionally rare because few of the Patriots of 1775-1783 lived until the dawn of practical photography in the early 1840s.

As a longtime student and practitioner of all things photographic, I tell anyone who will listen,

“Every photograph is an historical document”.

You’ve probably already been summoned to this thread. If not, here’s your call. I don’t have time to go through the whole thread, looking for your name. I am dumbfounded at these pictures and find them wonderful. I happen to be wearing my “Betsy Ross” flag shirt — a souvenir of Yorktown, today. I wish I’d known these guys — heros all.

Unlike these hardy men, my Rev. War ancestor was in his 50s when he served, so we have no picture of him.

SIMEON HICKS
A Minuteman from Rehoboth, Massachusetts, he drilled every Saturday in the year leading up to the war.

In those days, the Minutemen drilled at the local pub because they gave out free beer. True story.

FreedomPoster: "The term “regulated” applied to clocks means “accurate in keeping time”.
It made sense, particularly in 18th Century armies, to pay a lot of attention to how well soldiers could operate in massed formations."

Thanks for that explanation, makes perfect sense.
I've always wondered about it, never saw it explained before.

When I first saw it, it was a revelation for me, too. And I’ve been a big military history buff since childhood, especially the Napoleonic period, so I was very familiar with the weaponry and formations used, since they had changed very little from those used in the War of American Independence. It just made complete sense when viewed in that context.
