The Department of Defense welcomes the Supreme Court's decision today on the Defense of Marriage Act. The department will immediately begin the process of implementing the Supreme Court's decision in consultation with the Department of Justice and other executive branch agencies. The Department of Defense intends to make the same benefits available to all military spouses -- regardless of sexual orientation -- as soon as possible. That is now the law and it is the right thing to do.
Every person who serves our nation in uniform stepped forward with courage and commitment. All that matters is their patriotism, their willingness to serve their country, and their qualifications to do so. Today's ruling helps ensure that all men and women who serve this country can be treated fairly and equally, with the full dignity and respect they so richly deserve.
Out of the 80+ replies to this thread so far, your questions are the only ones I’ve seen that address the problem with Hagel’s pronouncement. How can he make this determination when there are states where bases are located that have not legalized same sex marriage? Will the service member and gay partner sue the state because they are denied the benefits they were granted at the federal level by the elimination of DOMA? I see a further erosion of state’s rights and am not surprised by the gay advocates who stated yesterday that they plan on having same sex marriage legalized in all 50 states in the next 5 years! More tyranny to come!

Real men will leave the military in droves. Others will never sign up. Obama has destroyed out military in a mere 5 years.
Real men will still be driven to participate. It will eat away at the core of our forces, but there will be pockets of very elite and dedicated people none the less.
I lean toward your thoughts here, but then have to remind myself that we have always had homosexuals in the military. Granted, that was covert. Now it’s overt.
Of this contingent, there have been some very dedicated troops. We shouldn’t be all-encompassing when we talk of this group.
Do I think this is a bad idea, yes I do. This should not be our policy. It is not good. It will not help.
To be honest, I am more worried about the way Obama and company are slicing and dicing our forces. That doesn’t mean I am not concerned about the affects of homosexuals in the military. I still am. I am trying to keep it in perspective though.
It’s there. It’s reality. The full ramifications are not known at this time. I hope they aren’t devastating.
