Indeed. Or better yet, BECOME them.

The latter will happen.

We are in a different world than we were back then. I mean utterly different. Preppers were “nutcases” back then. It is now a growing wave in this country and a LOT of them are suburbanites. Fred’s articles on the subject become more relevant with every passing year:

God determines the outcome of wars...

I have a 2.5 hour round trip commute every day. I’ve been listening to the old testament the last couple of weeks from beginning to end. I’m just finishing up with II Kings.

There is a lot of that. And in my opinion it applies to things like the war between Germany and France in 1940.

The good guys don’t always win. And most of those in the south were not fighting about slavery, nor did they approve of it.

All that said, if the South had somehow been allowed to succeed, either through war or the north just giving in, the two resulting nations would have been like european nations. And other states may have chosen to succeed in BOTH countries. And there probably would have been battles or wars for land further west, and Mexico would probably have won some of those wars with weakened opponents.

IOW, in the end it looks like it was a very good thing, but the south had a strong case. After all, there was a lot of slavery in the north as well. They just didn’t depend on it as much as the south so it was easier for them to try to end it.

If Lincoln had not invoked the slavery issue AFTER the war had started, the North almost certainly would have lost, and the North american continent would probably have become another Europe with all the bickering, battles and wars between small nation-states.
