I have always noticed that the leaders in Mexico and the leaders of La Raza tend to be light skinned (castallenos) while the darker skinned people (morenos) are at the bottom of the pile. I notice the same thing when I look at Mexican television and look at the actors and newscasters. Of course they are always calling us racist. Just saying.....

The pigmentation caste system is lively in most of Latin America.

It’s different in my wife’s country, Cuba. Money rules there, and nationality.

My wife is reasonably fair (not like me, tho—I’m French/Swedish), but that doesn’t count. My f-in-law’s people are from Greece and the Canary Islands and owned vast tracts of land. That money talked loudly.

He arrived in Miami with nothing, but made a new fortune here from scratch, which regained him his status in the diaspora community.

That his daughter married an American with little money (at the time) was quite a step down for them. Fortunately, I’m quite pretty so they accepted me with smothering arms.

And if you know your Hispanic families, you know about those “smothering arms.”
