I think, being a recovering alcoholic, it was probably the Mormon prohibition on alcohol that appealed to him. There’s no temptation for him in those social circles.

There are plenty of *real* Christian “circles” within which prohibition of alcohol is a prominent feature. Church of Christ, to name just one.
