the NJ legislature would have just bounced the other law back in to prevent just that. That really was the best the GOP was gonna get out of it.

Exactly. Every Democratic governor in the country would have appointed somebody in his own party to complete the term.

But Christie punked out. He's still a'courtin' the NY Times editorial board and the left-leaning moderates, believing that he'll be their girl.

They'll bury his stupid fat ass as soon as their done using him.

Wasn't gonna happen. The NJ law is badly written, with two contradictory parts of a single bill, so neither part takes precedence. It looks like nobody bothered to read it, or at least think it through. Or they never expected anyone to die the day before a primary election, and five months before an election. If Christie appointed a "permanent" Republican senator, The NJ Democrat party would sue, and they would win. The NJ Supreme Court is dominated by liberal/Democrats.
