Doc, I was close to where you shot at the NVA. Sgt Rawlins and I went searching for him with our .45s. I had my radio operator, Moses, spread the word not to shot at anyone shooting a .45.

Captain Hock was suffering from the after effects of his wound, so I was calling all the shots during the night. Every fighting hole was on 100% with two facing out board and one facing inboard. The one hole that did not do this was the one the NVA walked up to and stood over the Marine on the right. When he locked up and saw the NVA, he just rotated his M-16 over and stuck the barrel in his chest. It was on full auto, so the NVA died instantly.

Doc, I have been looking for 3rd platoon corpsmen for years. From March to Sept 6, 1969, I commanded K-3. You probably treated me the first time I was wounded on May 31st. Moses, Doc, and I were wounded on Go Noi Island by a booby trapped frag. I think it was Doc Belcher who was the third one hit.

Thank you so much for your service and for protecting our Marines. This is such a beautiful tribute. I believe my father was on this same sweep with you. I found a box of his letters and I am currently putting together a memoir of his tour. He was a Marine in Kilo Company and recognizes a few names listed in your tribute. He was in the rice patty right at the tree line when the ambushed started. He was medivaced the first day of the Mother’s Day Massacre. I would love to connect you two together if you would like. Thanks again for posting this and for giving this a name to him, he has always referred to it as the worst day.

Hello, and thank you for putting up this tribute to Marines! My husband’s best friend in youth was KIA in the Mother’s Day Massacre. I didn’t know him, then, but I clearly remember that day, and how the leftists and anti-war activists tried to exploit this tragedy to make their case against the Vietnam war. So, here is what is bothering me, now. I wanted to re-visit this page, and put “Mother’s Day Massacre” into the Google search engine. I did find it, but first I got a lot of results for the Mai Lai Massacre, leading me to Wikipedia. When I went to Wikipedia, there was NOTHING on the Mother’s Day Massacre. I would like to request that someone (one or several) qualified persons please create a page for Wikipedia. It really bothers me that there is no mention of the MDM, but multiple pages on Mai Lai. I think that we can all agree that war is cruel and brutish, and regrettable. Sometimes they are the result of poor policy or involve tragic mistakes. Be that as it may, our young Marines were serving nobly, according to their sworn duty, and were slaughtered mercilessly in the rice paddies that terrible day. It was truly a massacre, and it should not be forgotten. This day in history really deserves it’s own page on Wikipedia and those who were not there deserve to hear the story, as best it can be told.. by those who WERE there.
