I used to think the same way. After George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin, not so much.
Even in a decidedly Red state. It doesn't take much to have Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton parachute in and make the rest of your life a living hell.
There should be the realization that the ONLY thing that matters in a situation like this is avoidance. Lack of proximity to areas where it may happen. I don't see myself (or my $$$) going to Chicago again. Ever. Stay as far away as you can, and if you do HAVE to go into high-threat areas use good planning and situational awareness ... not a firearm ... to keep yourself safe and away from trouble.
