Actually a shotgun (with the right ammo, choke, configuration and training)) is a pretty good short range weapon. Which is why you see them in many police cruisers. Most (not all) situations where you have a long range common criminal adversary allow you time and opportunity to retreat out of harms way.
Joe has given a lot of very bad advice on self defense, but that doesn't mean a shot gun is only good for waterfowl.

Joe’s advice “is go outside with a double-barreled shotgun and fire both barrels in the air”. That pretty much takes away it’s utility as a short range weapon. But you might bring down a bird or two. Yep, I think Ted got it just about right.

He was referring to biden’s advice to go out on the poarch and shoot two rounds into the air to scare off intruders... it is about the direction of the muzzle and not so much about the weapon.
