Sen. Lautenberg Wants Background Checks To Buy Gunpowder

WASHINGTON, D.C.—In the wake of the deadly bombing attacks in Boston, U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today announced that he will reintroduce legislation he has proposed in a prior Congress to require that sales of explosive powder be subject to a background check. He will also file the legislation as an amendment to the gun violence prevention bill currently on the Senate floor.

Current law allows an individual to purchase as much as 50 pounds of explosive “black powder” without a background check, and also permits an individual to purchase unlimited amounts of dangerous “smokeless powder” and “black powder substitute” without a background check. Sen. Lautenberg’s proposal would change that and require a background check for any purchase of these explosive powders. These powders can be used as the explosive material in assembling pipe bombs, used in the Columbine school shooting, and pressure cooker bombs, which may have been used in the recent Boston attack.

I think congress tried to enact this last year, but they hadn’t yet perfected the meters we’d all be required to wear on our *sses.

No doubt once this small technical difficulty has been overcome, the Congressional F*rt Tax will be a reality.

Umm, Senator, I can’t buy powder in NJ without an FID card, which you can’t get without an extensive background check...

How about potassium chlorate and table sugar?

As kids we used Potassium nitrate (Saltpeter), sugar & sulfur. Blew all kinds of stuff up.

We need a check on Lautenberg to see if he is still alive.

It wasn’t black powder or BP substitute. Not enough oxides left on the components, not enough smoke from the blast and the fire ball doesn’t look right.

I have shot it for 15 or 20 years and it definitely not black powder.

And it wasn’t tannerite.

The Psi limits of the pressure cooker are very low compared to the breech of a gun and with the damage the exposive would seem to have to be something with a lot of speed.

It’s still there. Two votes today on amendments, and the bill will be there after that.

You are spot on with the percentages. It is easy to make the stuff, but you must use a little precaution to prevent blowing yourself to he**. I wonder how many alchemists invented black powder but died before they could announce their discovery?:)

Yes we pulled the thead, for this quote for example:

Manipulating people isn’t a practice welcome at Free Republic.
Also the extremely graphic nature of the pictures posted wasn’t necessary.

“hey admin mod...pffffffft!”-—attitude noted.

I wasn't referencing your post. I was reading through a web page on another website. Inside, there was a blob of text from a person claiming to be an "insider" with knowledge that the Boston event was going to be blamed on a young (20's) white loner with mental problems as an excuse for restricting access to powder for reloaders. I never saw your post. My source was independent of your suggestion.
