The story says the pics were sent to WHDH a Boston tv station who forwarded them to the FBI.
Not likely, on the video the blast seemed to emanate from the rear of the crowd near the building.
Sorry, I am talking about the photos at this link that show the bomb. Sorry for the confusion.

The one near the rear was the first bomb, this appears to be the second which was close to the road.

Anybody’s guess, but nothing’s too secure once it hits the internet.
In #60, doesn’t appear to be any blood on the barricades that were moved.
Don’t think the 2nd pic was much later because there are just civilians in the pic, no LEOs.
I would agree that the position of the barricade looks like the bomb was directly behind it, but that bag could still be the bomb being placed in position. I strongly suggest that authorities track down the person with the white shirt and brown jacket if he/she isn’t a casualty.
If that was the bomb, the mailbox should have sustained some visible damage from the shrapnel. I saw some investigators on TV today investigating that spot and the mail box was still intact and present.
If that was the bomb, I would suspect to see some damage or the box removed or covered for evidence.
I sure hope they find the person or people who carried this very large bag to that location. Probably well beforehand. I’d screen every last employee having anything to do with that marathon, especially street/event crew.
Good observation. I’m a structural engineer and it’s staggering to consider the force it took to bend that barrier with pressure.

Where is the black bag on the right of the street light in front of the lead runner on the side walk in the first photo?
I’m not saying this was in any way the device but it is missing from the second photo?

Are you aware there were 2 bombs? First one seemed to be away from the street, second one right where these crime scene investigators are.
The second blast looks near the road but behind the barricade to me. Between the barricade and the seating? Is the FBI working on this stuff or is it going to take some crowdsourcing?
These bombs are spraying objects.....I’m sure the mailbox got sprayed,too....
