Do you remember my story about my friend Charlie in 1968, the one whom I set straight on who would be the nominees in that year’s presidential race and who would win? In October 1970, when Janis Joplin died of an overdose, Charlie was stunned. “I always knew she was a juicer, but I never thought she was into the hard sh!t,” he said in shock. Heroin was her final poison, not Southern Comfort.

Kris Kristofferson never got the credit he deserved, either as an actor or a songwriter. Roger Miller had been first to record this song, but it was Janis who made it immortal. It came in at #6 this week.
