Unseen Danger

April 6, 2013

When I was a young child, our family escaped near tragedy. Most of the main appliances in the house, as well as the furnace, were fueled by natural gas, but a small leak in one of the gas lines put our lives at risk. As the gas poured into our little house, our family was overcome by the lethal fumes and we lost consciousness. Had we not been discovered by a neighbor who happened to stop by for a visit, we all could have been killed by this dangerous, unseen enemy.

As followers of Christ, we can also find ourselves surrounded by unseen dangers. The toxic realities of temptation and the weaknesses of our own human frailty can endanger our lives and relationships. Unlike the natural gas in my childhood home, however, these unseen dangers do not come from outside of us—they reside within us. James wrote, “Each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed” (James 1:14).

Our natural tendency to sin, compounded by blind spots that prevent us from seeing our own weaknesses, can lead to toxic choices that ruin us. It is only by submitting to God as He shows us our hearts in His Word (vv.23-25) that we can live a life that pleases the Master.

Spirit of God, descend upon my heart;
Wean it from earth, through all its pulses move;
Stoop to my weakness, mighty as Thou art,
And make me love Thee as I ought to love. —Croly
The unseen Spirit of God is the greatest protection against sin’s unseen dangers.

Read: James 1:13-25

Each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. —James 1:14

Recently, my son, who is in the first grade at public school was asked what he studied. He lives with his mother for now and I hadn't seen him in three years. His answer was "extinct and endangered animals" which horrified me. This is what they teach first graders these days?

Anyhow, rants aside, it got me to thinking about extinction and what might be going away soon. Did you see today's stock market FRiend? Have you followecd the situation in Cyprus, Greece and most of Europe? How's that 401K working out for you? The value of your house goes down and the taxes go up.

This week I've been playing with some Relative Worth calculators on the Internet and though they vary widely from one commodity to another, the average inflation rate since 1955 (the year I was born) until now is 766.3 percent. That means it now takes between $8.66 up to $36.40 to match the value of a 1955 dollar (and don't even look at the price of gold). The rate is skyrocketing as the Fed prints and pumps more dollars into the system to prop it up and as our debt and deficits rise we are in a downward spiral that seems irreversable. Money may not be going extinct, but the relative worth of that money and what it can buy is plunging and out of control.

Studying the Weimar Republic several stories struck me. Paper money became so worthless that people burned it to stay warm because it was cheeper than wood or fuel. By the end you needed a wheelbarrow to deposit a days wage in the bank. One story sums it up in horrorfying sadness. A man turned his back on his wheelbarrow of cash only to find a thief had dumped his worthless money on the ground and stolen the wheelbarrow.

Will it happen here? Does history repeat itself? Does a bear sit in the woods?

Tonight, Drumbo salutes Money, the want of which is the root of all evil, but can a Free Republic survive without it?
