In this case, the parents were dumb to put a BB gun into the hands of a 7 year old kid. Not without being certain he is mature enough to handle it responsibly.
Parents messed up, kid gets a felony charge which will ruin his life. This whole scenario is a case of cruel and unusual punishment.
