More to the point, he won because his opponent was unwilling or unable to articulate the fact that leftist programs fundamentally don't work as their promoters claim. It is fundamentally evil to take money from productive people and give it to able-bodied people who choose not to work, when there is useful work that those people could be doing (even if a person's labor would only be generate $1/hour worth of profit for a business, having the business pay that person $1/hour while they're primarily supported by welfare would be better than having the person receive those same welfare benefits for sitting idle). The problem with welfare isn't that it takes too much money out of rich people's pockets--it's that it is by design fundamentally evil to reward sloth and punish industry.
