Friendship

April 2, 2013

Friendship is one of life’s greatest gifts. True friends seek a special kind of good for their friends: the highest good, which is that they might know God and love Him with all of their heart, soul, and mind. German pastor and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “The aim of friendship is exclusively determined by what God’s will is for the other person.”

Jonathan, David’s friend, is a sterling example of true friendship. David was in exile, hiding in the Desert of Ziph, when he learned that “Saul had come out to seek his life” (1 Sam. 23:15). Jonathan went to Horesh to find David. The significance of this scene lies in Jonathan’s intent: He helped David find strength in God or, as the text puts it, he “strengthened his hand [grip] in God” (v.16).

That is the essence of Christian friendship. Beyond common interests, beyond affection, beyond wit and laughter is the ultimate aim of sowing in others the words of eternal life, leaving them with reminders of God’s wisdom, refreshing their spirit with words of His love, and strengthening their grip on God.

Pray for your friends and ask God to give you a word “in season” to help them find renewed strength in our God and His Word.

Dear Lord, thank You for loving us. May Your love
compel us to show love to others. Give us
sensitivity to Your Spirit that we might know how
to encourage them in their walk with You.
A true friend is a gift from God and one who points us back to Him.

Read: 1 Samuel 23:14-18

A friend loves at all times. —Proverbs 17:17

Shaw AFB was the last remote CONUS ( Contenetal United States ) tour until the early 70s.

IDK if it's still there, but back in the 80s they had a B-66 ( the same plane from the movie “BAT 21” ) on static display in front of the entrance to Shaw. It only flew once. On it's first flight, the pilot tried a roll in it. Plane wasn't designed for that. Strained most every fastener and warped the airframe so bad that it never flew again. Was said that the pilot ended up in Leavenworth Federal prison. That roll was forbidden by regs.

As of last year, the B-66 in my story is still in front of Shaw AFB.

About 1981 we got the call at Plattburgh AFB, NY that one of our FB-111A bombers had an IFE ( In Flight Emergency ) due to an engine failure and had to land at Shaw. Had to have a large group of maintenance personnel from our base to go there. My parents came up for a visit so I was happy for that. Did our weapons thing which wasn't much and helped with an engine change. Once we were done the pilot had to do some maneuvers to test the plane out. He did a low level full swept wing near supersonic pass over Shaw's runway which was way cool as they never did it at our base.

Now getting to what I think is the funny part. FB-111s leaked oil and hydraulic fluid worse than any other plane in the USAF at the time. We used every precaution to prevent fluid spills, large metal drip pans, and plenty of speedy dry. Cleaned up as best we could. Our plane left and we packed it in to return to NY. When our C-130 left we noticed from the air a large brown stain that could be well seen on the huge field of white which never had a plane on it before. It seems that all of the concrete was new as Shaw was only weeks away from getting it's first F-16s.
