Thanks, Luv....he never went to college, but he was a survey supervisor for a section of the Alaska Pipeline. He helped get a section built. He was in Prudhoe Bay when the first drop of oil started down the pipeline, and in Valdez when the first drop reached Valdez, ready to head down to the lower 48.

He told a story about talking to some engineers who designed concrete saddles to help keep the pipe under water for river crossings. A group of dignitaries where watching and he said it wouldn’t work because xxxxx. As soon as the cranes were withdrawn, up popped the pipe. He enjoyed that story.

I remember hearing of “Vinegar Joe”. Looked like he chewed nails and spit them out! LOL!

Of course this was all media propaganda.

CBI was a very tough place.

My Brother says he never stopped talking about it.
I never remember him talking about it, and I am the eldest.

All I know is that it wasn’t easy feeding them guys in the Burmese jungle.
They were MAKING the supply line, ergo there was no supply line.

By the time the line was complete to Kunming the war was over.

It was a Grand effort that got little regard in history, but that by no means diminishes the dedicated backbreaking work that was done for the effort.

It was pure brute strength and determination rounded with good ol boy engineering.

The legacy of the relations with Chiang Kai Shek, and India linger on to this day.

Camp Clairborne was located near Alexandria, LA. This was about the 3rd week of July 1943. It was a very hot and humid area in a large camp. We were located about seven miles back from the main gate. We were housed in one story tar paper covered barracks, heated with small pot bellied, sheet metal, wood­ burning stoves. Water put on the wooden floors to scrub them ran through the cracks before you could use a mop. I believe the unit was the 365th Engineers. Everyone in the unit was a Specialist of some sort. They built a new Officers Club there using entirely Engineer Troop Specialists. After picking up cigarette butts for two days I volunteered to drive a truck. Surprise, I actually ended up with a Military Driver's license and drove a truck daily. I would start the day by getting a load of fresh, hot bread from the Bakery, then meet a friend who was hauling milk, butter and eggs. We would slice open a loaf of warm bread, put a cube of butter in it, and, along with a quart of milk, started a nice new day.

Not a bad way to start the day. LOL!
