Both of those wars were fought against an external source of supply, the Soviets in Vietnam and the Iranians in Afghanistan. Fighting the long guerrilla war without functional communications, a command structure, or extensive cached supplies, and against an enemy surely willing to use biological weapons and drug gangs is not a pretty prospect.

No, I think it is you who has failed to learn the lesson of history. The better analogy to the war you envision is the American Indian. They lost, utterly.
