The difference between the Victorians and modern Americans is that the Victorians had a far better understanding of human nature.
I am not excusing anyone here, the perpetrators, their parents, their friends, the girl, her parents, whatever nitwit supplied the alcohol. It’s murder on the Orient Express, they all did it.
She wasn’t in a drunken stupor, she was drugged. According to the story on another thread, she was the ex girlfriend of one of the guys involved and he set this up to get revenge on her for the break up.
