You may be thinking of Cardinal Wolsey? He certainly learned the error of his ways. He ended up being accused of treason and died of poor health, conveniently before he was executed. In his final days it’s reported that he said, “If I had served my God as diligently as I did my king, He would not have given me over in my grey hairs.”
