If you drove by CITGO’s corporate headquarters yesterday you would have seen what many consider a disturbing sight.
Many Houstonians are up in arms after driving by CITGO's Eldridge Parkway headquarters and noticing the U.S., Texas and Venezuelan flags being flown at half staff, and you let your feeling show on Matt Patrick's afternoon show.
“I gave them a call, and the operator told me that it was in observance and respect of the death of Hugo Chavez,” Teddy told Matt Patrick on his afternoon show on The 9-5-0 yesterday.
Teddy wasn’t satisfied with the company’s explanation.
“I told the person that answered the phone that if she had a problem with raising the flag back up that I could come down and do it for her,” he said.
And it wasn't just at the corporate headquarters. Flags were at half staff at a refinery in Corpus Christi as well.
A caller named ‘Doc’ told Patrick, “I called their facilities manager and led a march of about 800 patriots from one of my Facebook pages.”
Doc also said he would head down to the corporate headquarters and take matters into his own hands if necessary.
“I’m ready to go down there. Eldridge isn’t far from my house. I’ll either remove the flag or I will put it at full mast,” he stated.
CITGO, a Venezuelan owned company, released a statement explaining why the flags were lowered, confirming it was to honor Chavez, who died on Tuesday from cancer.
The flag may only be lowered for the death of foreign dignitaries if indicated in Presidential instructions.

Disgusting. I used to fuel up at 7-11 but haven’t since I started using Hess. Now that Hess is going away, I’m afraid my choices my be limited since Hess and 7-11 are the predominant fuel providers in the area.
I can’t remember last time I went to a Citgo.
I’d rather run out of gas and call AAA.
I’d love to see that Citgo sign in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood removed. Upsets me every time I watch a Red Sox game

We’re on a PERMANENT boycott of CITGO; were already on it before this.
Chavez nationalized (stole) oil industries and they are bowing to the dead god.
Texas, sure. But why the other two?
I will not buy their gas anymore.

I stopped patronizing CITCO Stations years ago.
A worm goes to join the other worms. That calls for a celebration.
It’s their property, their company, their flags and their flagpole.
And you can boycott Citgo but being that oil in fungible, you likely cannot avoid buying Citgo oil products.
7-11 stopped using Citgo as a supplier in 2006
Citgo used to have a handful of gas stations in my town some years back. After the word got out they were using Venezuelan oil, enough people boycotted the stations that they all closed down within a year. Haven’t seen on in the area since.

Eff CITGO! They are all over our area - including only a couple of miles from our house... my husband and I will NOT use their gas. We've been boycotting 'em for many years now, and the boycott continues.
Just about every picture of Fenway Park shows the Citgo sign behind The Green Monster.

You live in a great area with a lot of good patriots! Unfortunately, here in the People's Socialist Republik of Connecticut, Citgo stations are thriving... people are always at the pumps, getting their "cheap" gas (selling their souls to the Devil, IMO).
My husband and I have been boycotting Citgo for many years, even though their stations are all around us...
A month? My husband and I (and everyone we educate about Citgo) have been boycotting Citgo every since Dictator Hugo Chavez took it over.
Those damn Citgo stations are all over our area, and their gas is usually the least expensive, but we always drive right past 'em...

Citgo’s not owned by the US or TX government, last I checked. It’s owned by the Venezuelan governemt. If they want to fly their flag at half-staff, that’s their business. But they shouldn’t have lowered the US and TX flags as well. I would caution anybody intending to go there and raise the two flags by force, that would be trespassing and criminal mischief.
Does anyody know? Do they normally fly the US flag below the Venezuelan flag?
I see. And I see they follow the correct protocol of the US flag being on the left, when facing the building.
I wouldn’t have lowered the non-Venezuelan flags if I were in charge there. Probably would the Citgo flag, being a governmentowned company.
But there are a lot more things to be pi$$ed at Citgo for.

Four years later, Citgo attempted to disassemble the weatherbeaten sign, and was surprised to be met with widespread public affection for the sign and protest at its threatened removal. The Boston Landmarks Commission ordered its disassembly postponed while the issue was debated. While never formally given landmark status, it was refurbished and relit by Citgo in 1983 and has remained in operation ever since.

CITGO was previously known as Cities Service and was headquartered in Tulsa. Their choice to take the HQ to Houston left many disgruntled here in Tulsa, resulting in a significant loss of business for those local CITGO-branded stations.
I’ve seen Lukoil stations, but didn’t realize they were Russian owned until I googled it after your post.
According to Wikopedia they have also purchased Getty Oil and some stations selling other brands:
“In 2000, Lukoil purchased Getty Oil and converted a number of Getty stations in the US to Lukoil in 2003.
“In 2004, Lukoil acquired Schlotzmeyer Bros., who formerly owned the Mobil stations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Many of these stations had Circle K stores, which Lukoil converted to its own Kwik Farms brand. However, many Mobil franchisees in the area did not want to convert their stations to Lukoil, because it sold its fuel at the same prices as more established brands.”
The NAS Jacksonville gas station took down its CITGO sign several years ago. I don’t know if they still buy their gas FRom CITGO, but I haven’t bought gas there since Chavez stole Venezuela.
I haven’t been anywhere near a CITGO station since then, come to think of it, and I get a large grin when I see a closed CITGO station.
I’ve avoided Citgo since Chavez showed up on the world stage but I wonder if he was really any worse than the arab states that provide so much of the other gasoline.
CITGO pulled a name change to try and hide the fact they are owned by a Marxist. Their retail centers were are under the Valero name. Don’t be fooled, same anti-American crew there.
I have a love hate relationship with that sign. It has been around so long it has become a part of the area. I hate what it stands for, but would miss it if removed.
I know of several that closed in my area. The ones that remain open are in small towns as the only station.
The 7-Elevens in mt state switched from Citgo to another brand after Chavez’ “sulfur” remark.
I thought most people got wise to CitGo way back in the early Bush years. Most of them only managed to survive because of their convenience stores, but we caused enough business impact in our area to force one to sell out the petro vendorship to ARCO.

I'll bet the city inspector of signs would find them to be half rusted thru and need to be taken as a hazardous condition now exists.
