Nixon was a commie hunter too and look what happened to him. I have very mixed feelings about Nixon. But his career-building role in catching and prosecuting Communist agent Alger Hiss is "why" it happened to him. The outing of Hiss was something American Communist bigwigs would not allow to go un-avenged.
