There’s some discussion of this on the breaking thread.

Basically

1) The earlier in the day, the more TV is focused on women, and many women are much more interested in the cruise ship and the crime drama of a famous athlete killing his girlfriend than some weird science story

2) It’s in an obscure part of Russia with no foreign media

3) The media worked itself into a frenzy over the cruise ship and the payoff was today, and that’s where all the reporters are, and they are not going to tolerate being ignored for their live interviews

I imagine there are a lot of schoolchildren with bad cuts and blown-out eardrums; as horrible as it sounds the only way for this to get more attention would be for Oprah to interview some crying Russian kids.

Sad but true. Frankly, a potential city-killing meteorite ranks a good deal higher on the "importance" scale than an ill-fated voyage aboard the USS Craptanic. Or at least, it should.
