Although I agree with you brother, someone upthread suggested the possibility of the onset of dementia - maybe an Alzheimer’s-like condition, or Loewy-Body Syndrome.
If that’s so, and he made the decision to not continue in that diminished capacity, it’s probably the right move.
My immediate gut instinct is that this is probably the case.
Having lived through a family member go through that hell of losing all memory and recognition, I can only imagine what is going through his mind right now, if that indeed is the case.
I hope that is not what is happening...it’s terrible.
I am sure Popes in the past have gone crazy, become physically sick and disabled and with much less available in the medical field, they still held the line.......I believe one of the greatest benefits was the example they gave.....an example that even though the could quit, they continued on, inspite of the pain......relying on what humans have relied on for thousands of centuries, family.
His family of Cardinals and Priest, is a family that has always cared for the Pope. Has the Papal Family broken down? IDK but sometimes you have to have faith in your side, and you hold the position till you die. Well we shall see if more info comes out. Have a good Fat Tuesday.
