To be fair...an extended middle finger or the ‘f’ word is one of the prime ways many New Englanders communicate, and they are at a loss without those options. It’s like ‘bless your heart’ down south. :-)
I grew up in a very, very gentile community. E.g., at a 4-way stop, drivers would ignore the rule *guy-on-the-left-goes-first*, and you'd sit there *forever*....waving....*you go first....no, you go, first....no,no ...you go now* and at the butcher/deli counter....it was almost always ...*you're before me.... no, you can go, I'm sure I'm after you*..... the only time this politeness is broken was by some tourist...who has no clue of the strange custom of a small town.
I've lamented on threads, that since Obama's first 4-year regime, people are on edge.....the polite has gone the way of *ME FIRST* ...it seems to be the way of a permanent road-rage in most situations....to the point where I am never-never not carrying. People here have gone bat-sh!t cra-cra. :(
I'm still reeling from PTSD post 2012 November. How *he* got re-elected is unfathomable!
