mobs of kids – 20, 30, 40 or more — appear out of nowhere and suddenly charge a newsstand or convenience store.

Sounds like an argument for a very large magazine. Contrary to the media, those are not "assault" weapons but DEFENSE weapons, against mobs and gangs and robber bands that infest our cities.
