Goodbye candy bars and sugary cookies. Hello baked chips and diet sodas.

The government for the first time is proposing broad new standards to make sure all foods sold in schools are more healthful, a change that would ban the sale of almost all candy, high-calorie sports drinks and greasy foods on campus.

It’s not stupidity. It’s conditioning. By repeatedly subjecting people to an imposed lifestyle, they get conditioned to being imposed upon.

That is just it...

you see it, I see it, but they keep pushing...

why?

So instead of teaching kids good nutrition...they ban the foods. Instead of teaching critical thinking ...they ban the need to think.

Many of us graduated in an era when schools did not have vending machines. You ate breakfast at home, had lunch at school, and ate dinner at home. I know that is an astonishing concept to most people, but it worked and taught good eating habits. People can make it through the day with three-squares and no grazing on snacks.

The whole vending machine in schools thing started because schools were desperate to make a few more shekels, not because kids need the extra calories during the day.

Local school boards should simply ban all vending machines and snack sales during the day. Problem solved.

The only vending machines we had were in the senior student lounge.

We did have a la carte in the High School, not in the elementary or junior schools.

As far as “needing” the calories..I did a lot of sports in high school. Diving practice from 6am-8am, direct to school start at 8:30am and after class from 3pm-6pm swim team practice. I needed those extra calories and the associated vitamin nutrition that came with getting real food snacks too.

If you don’t think your property taxes are high enough, by all means, pay more. I like the fact that responsible school systems, through creative financing, are meeting federal spending mandates without breaking the backs of the taxpayers.

Goodbye, concession stands, which help fund the sports programs and the band.

I thought this had already been done. The last few times I was in a school there was nary a potato chip nor pop machine to be found.

Before the federal free lunch program our schools HAD healthy meals and no candy. Now their idea of a healthy meal is chicken nuggets and tater tots.

Or if they don’t have enough carbs. ...they physically can’t learn much.

Some interesting research has shown that mental concentration actually drains glucose from a key part of the brain associated with memory and learning – underscoring just how crucial this blood sugar is for proper brain function.

When I was a kid it was milk or water, and sweets were either a cookie, jello or sheet cake.

What era exactly did you graduate in. I’m 55 and we had vending machines in both Junior and Senior High. They were on during school hours.
