Philadelphia (CNN) -- Andrew Cattaneo is still in shock.
It's been only a day since his neighbor across the street, Melissa Ketunuti, was found dead in the basement of her row home Monday afternoon, her hands and feet bound, her body set on fire.
Standing in the doorway of his home, Cattaneo watched as police detectives returned to the scene Tuesday while news reporters huddled nearby trying to stay warm on the blustery January afternoon.
"She was very pleasant, very nice, very friendly and quiet," Cattaneo said, looking across the street. "It's very upsetting."
Although authorities were awaiting the final autopsy report, Philadelphia Police Capt. James Clark, homicide commanding officer, said at a news conference Tuesday morning that Ketunuti, a 35-year-old physician, apparently was strangled. There were no immediately obvious signs of sexual assault, Clark said.

To bad she didn’t have a handgun for protection.
I’d be going back to college years and guys that she turned down for a date. Someone held a big grudge.
RIP.
Why would anyone with a future waste it in Philadelphia?
Why would anyone with a future waste it in Afghanistan? Iraq? Viet Nam? Korea? France? Germany? Some gawdaful malarial Pacific Island?
Yes, I know ... I'm calling Philthydelphia a war zone, and some folks might be upset that I'm insulting war zones ...
Drug Deal gone awry
Liberals want all of us to be disarmed, too.
It seems the lady IS a real doctor, and she doesn't appear to live in a "bad" neighborhood.
The death scene is obviously torture and evidence coverup.
The doctor looks Asian and her name is unusual to me.
The “City of Brotherly Love” is a crime-infested sh*t hole on the model of our recently admired and much-praised Kenya.
Wonder what happened in such a climate....
I really never knew anyone who’s future was behind them. Just sayin’.

There is true evil in the world.
For this we have a right to self defense, and 6 rounds often isn’t enough.
The "Center City" section is very middle/upper-middle class. The term "row house" does not mean "dilapidated slum house". In this context it just means a house that shares common walls with the neighboring house. She was a resident/research fellow, and was likely making good money, but would not be making huge money until after she passed her boards.
Looking at her dad in the picture, I'm guessing Hawaiian or some other flavor of Pacific Islander.

And it came up as strongly western Austria, specifically the region around Landeck, Austria.
My #9
BAN MATCHES.
Many of us don’t make big money even after passing boards and practicing for 25 years or so
Hmmmm .. that Kontiki really did some travelin' ...
BAN MATCHES.
Thank goodness she’s not black and living - or used to be - in Chicago or else the media wouldn’t care.
Depends how old you are. The ancient Greeks believed that your past - the known - was in front of you. Your future - the unknown and unseen - was behind you.
The name is Hawaiian.
I dunno about that "world name profiler." This is the second time it ran me down to a total wrong Zip Code :o)
Yes. As a parent, these stories about murder of young women and men just bring tears to my eyes. My BIL’s brother was murdered many years ago. Pray for her family to have strength to get through this.

True. There are some areas of the city that were once run down, but hae now "trendy" in recent years (Northern Liberties, the Art Museum area.) Row Homes in those areas which sold for about $ 75,000 ten or fifteen years ago are now selling for $ 300,000 - $ 500,000.
time to take that link off your desktop.
And as a parent you are not supposed bury your kids. Your kids are supposed to bury you.
Better ban rope.
Notice the inane nature of our “political leaders”. The public doesn’t need guns to defend themselves. It’s all rainbows and unicorns out there.
Somebody once told me that true happiness is the Grandfather passes, then the Father, then the Child. So true.
America is being, and has been, programmed to think with subliminal devices.
In your case, a program that gives false information .. (class project: input, barack hussein obama .. Irish ?)
and my favorite;
After swiping (hmm, that means stolen in MY neighborhood) your card at the store, the reader asks, "Is $85.32 OK ?", to which you automatically ... get it? ... AUTOMATICALLY .. punch "yes", and your card is debitted.
I always turn it on the clerk (whom is not really paying attention and only the older cashiers look at me and smile knowingly .. )..
"How would I know ?"
'Cause the machine says so
Isn't that how we got the president?
(My wife hates going shopping with me ... I start trouble everywhere I go)
I don’t think doctors are compensated nearly enough for what they do, how many years they have to go to school, and the responsibilities they have. If government would just butt out and let the market work, then doctors and patients would be better off.
No, I am not buttering you up just because you are a doctor... unless you live close to me. ;-)
Some of those row houses price at the upper six figures - Society Hill.
Just ‘cause she was a doctor doesn’t mean she was very wealthy. Hundreds of thousands in student debt, maybe still in residency. The big bucks don’t kick in right away and under Obamacare, maybe won’t ever.
You ain’t kidding. I remember serving arrest warrants in Northern Liberties - Society Hill’s poor cousin.
You had to get control of the rooftops first or you’re in trouble.
Plebbo.
Peffy Plebbo.
Yeah. It’d probably tell me Cyterski is Irish :o)
I know what you mean. Both of our sons were home-schooled: the older one entered the public school system in 10th grade, the younger one in 7th grade.
They can make change as easily as breathing.
Their friends see this as some sort of inexplicable genius. Just because their brains work within what I would call a normal range.
It reads as if she spent her time and energy studying medicine rather than socializing. Her resume is pretty strong.
Probability of being called “islamophobe” too.
About 4 months ago, I was talking with a friend who has “progressed” from being a Republican, when I first met her 20 years ago, to a “progressive.” She did it for 2 of her kids, who are lefties.
She’d said something, and I replied, “We ought to be doing something more to defend schools from the jihad.”
She turned in her seat, looking at me with surprise in her face:
“Are you an islamophobe?!!!”
I spent the next 20 minutes having to recite all of what was happening in the news, un-reported by the now-”palace media.”
I managed to suggest to her, a scenario (Bresland, Russia - Sept. 2004 I think it was), and how I would respond (”I’d shoot the bad guys.”)
She of course, finally *thinking* about what would happen here, had to acknowledge that the kids needed to be protected by my taking the fight to the jihadi’s.
She wonders, though, after a few invites (T’giving and Christmas), why I don’t drop by anymore?
We would all be better off if the government would butt out. What most people don’t realize is thanks to Medicare and Medicaid we only collect about 30% of what we bill. Try going into Home Depot and ordering a house full of carpet and telling them you will pay 30% of what they bill. Won’t go over so well....
I cannot find among the women I know, even one who realizes her vulnerability that exists, by her mere ignorance of how she is MISSING DETERMINATION in her bearing.
That determination to be alert and defend herself, pronounced because she HAS THE RIGHT and maintains herself in a manner that is ready to change gears and put up a fight.
A determination that comes naturally to those raised and trained to defend themselves and others.
The ladies are aware of it in some men - that is, some of the ladies can see this ... determination ... that is as naturaly as the sky is blue.
It is also what bad people see and steer away from, because their animalism alerts them to the presence of pain and punishment, if they assault a person of such bearing.
This bearing is partly due to disclipine and training, which are efforts in which a lot of people don’t wish to be bothered -— I hear this: “I just don’t want to have to think about it!”
I reply: “I trained long ago as a youngster; and personal defense, your bearing, become natural - you don’t even think about it much, until your own alert system spots ‘one of the animals eyeing people, looking for vulnerabilities.’”
On some occasions, I’ve walked up to a girl/gal/lady and asked them if they are aware of “those three fellows over there who have not left this area of the store ... I’m aware that they are VERY AWARE OF YOU.”
To my relief, when these situations occur, I have found that the gals are thankful to find a person who has come to their relief.
On one occasion, I was at a food store, and I certainly spotted the gal, the moment I walked into the store - of course I wanted to ask her out, right then and there. As usual for me, I tossed around inside, trying to get up the courage to go over and start up a conversation.
Yet I had to pick up some food, and so I briefly lost sight of her.
I grabbed some food and looked back, and it was then, that I the three men - two of whom were VERY OBVIOUSLY watching her from a distance, and a third man was working his way around her, also from a distance ... the three men communicating by motion and eye contact.
It was amazing in the sense of, it was like watching wolves circling their prey in some “nature show on TV.”
Well, I’m so accustomed to be “scared” to walk up to a gal, that I just made a note to self, that if I saw her again, with the three men “hunting” her, I’d maybe step in and start up a conversation.
I went about my business, picked up groceries, checked out and was half-way to my car, when I decided, “no dice ... I’m going back in there, no matter what.” I parked my groceries in the car and walked back to the store.
Upon entering, I found that the gal being hunted was still in the same produce area of the store, and the three animals were still circling from a distance. Wish I could have filmed it all happening.
I ignored the glances from the men who OBVIOUSLY disliked my looking at her, as I walked straight to her.
I introduced myself quietly, explaining that I was a frequent customer (familiar face) to the store, and I was a bit concerned for her safety ... “Young lady, would you like to start walking toward the checkout lanes and the courtesy desk, and I will walk nearby you, sort of escorting you but maintaining a distance from you, while also maintaining myself and those three men, who it does seem to me, intend to grab you.”
She was gorgeous, did I mention that?
She looked into my eyes and smiled, and said:
“I have been aware of two of them for some time, and I’ve not left this more-open area of the store for the last 25 minutes or so BECAUSE I AM AFRAID OF THEM.”
I replied that I was thankful that she was on alert, and that there were actually three of these men who were OBVIOUSLY too interested in her. She looked around and spotted “the outlyer.” Oh. Yeah, oh.
At which point, the three wanna-be-perps that evening, realizing that the game was up, then joined together and walked out of the store.
I had done my duty.
She was very thankful. I suggested that she still go to the courtesy counter, to relate her story, and I would be glad to go along to verify the events.
She said no, that would not be necessary.
OK, and we shook hands, wished each other well, and I left the store.
I staying in my car, watching the store, until she left, getting into her car and drove away.
I’d done my duty. I’ve done this a number of times, just watching over some gal who has been targeted by some creep(s).
I’m relating the story only because, I do wish that the ladies would wake up? Please?
And not be so willing to deny the right we have to defend ourselves.
Only in these instances, do I come across women who *get* that we must defend ourselves.
Otherwise, I encounter way too many times, women who haven’t many clues, and mostly, they are suffering from A LOT OF WISHFUL THINKING THAT BAD THINGS ARE ONLY GOING TO HAPPEN TO SOMEBODY ELSE.
I do not think, that the ladies realize, that their vulnerability will skyrocket, in the event we are forced to disarm, satisfying their expressed wishes among those in their social circles, in which the appearance of their liberal-ness/progress-ive-ism is paramount for their vanities ... while in real life, they must be prepared to act in their defense and not be irrational by insisting that only some police officers arriving 18 minutes too late, can assist them.
I wish to inform the ladies, that 18 minutes in real life, is too late.
Yet, as they are mostly liberal ladies, they do not want to hear this.
BTW, the liberal ladies with guns, are completely un-tuned from any issues about the 2nd Amendment -— they live in their own imaginations where the laws do not apply to them, because they are women and they roar: CERTAINLY OBAMA will not deny them their rights?!
I now days wonder, if it is possible for me to come to the aid of any stranger.

ABC News consultant and former FBI agent Brad Garrett said the culprit is likely someone Ketunuti knew.

Good story. I imagine those guys just moved on to other prey. Somewhere there is a sad story as postscript to yours, most likely.
Another Bloomberg follower.
As it turns out, many theories were wrong.
The murderer was a local Philadelphia white guy named Jason Smith who was an exterminator she hired, and she apparently had a dispute with him over the work.
She did not know this guy and his motive was apparently not robbery.
His story is that she insulted him during their argument, he lost his cool and hit her, she fell and hit her head and then he got scared and tried to hide the evidence by trussing her and burning the place.
Which is probably exactly what his attorney told him to say.
One thing I hate is how they keep calling this a "tragedy". I regret the day that word jumped over from Literary Criticism and made it into Journalism.
This is not a "tragedy". This is a crime. A damnable act. A cold-blooded murder.
" Which is probably exactly what his attorney told him to say."
An educated Asian making an insulting remark to a laborer?
That doesn't fit the profile.
