ALBANY Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law on Tuesday a sweeping package of gun control measures, significantly expanding a ban on assault weapons and making New York the first state to change its laws in response to the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.
Mr. Cuomo signed the bill less than an hour after the State Assembly approved the legislation on a 104-to-43 vote. The State Senate approved the measure, 43 to 18, on Monday night.
The expanded ban on assault weapons broadens the definition of such weapons, banning semiautomatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and one military-style feature, as well as semiautomatic shotguns with one military-style feature. New Yorkers who already own such guns can keep them but will be required to register them with the state.

Going to be interesting to see what happens once the Fudds find out that the law bans a lot of their precious duck hunting guns - it bars all semi-auto shotguns that have a FIXED magazine capacity of more than 7.
Many of them have 8 round tubes.
Yeah, THAT’LL help the crime rate!
Now, how are they going to talk the criminals into giving up THEIR weapons?
HMMMMM???
The Slimes from NY are gonna run background checks on ammo purchases.
Some New Yorker ought to take a page out of Unintended Consequences:
Pay for a billboard that reads, “Cuomo’s Death Clock -(enter number here) murdered since anti-defense law signed.”
One more good reason to avoid New York.
Feel safer now New *Yerkers*, hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
Good news for criminals.
Your odds just got better!
Why do lawful gun owners always have to bear the burden of crimes committed with guns?
The communists push is really part of the communists Democrats in NY. This push could be the beginning of an effort to defy the communists and might start a little war. Just how does this little King think he can enforce this idiotic plan. NY is in real trouble, and just might be the end of the communists Democratic jackasses. NY might wake up.
Well why would anyone need more than a couple of rounds to defend themselves? I don’t know how many times Ive heard this carp from liberals I know! I have started responding to them by pointing out just how many times our well trained police officers miss their target while shooting at a suspect and ask if we should mandate a return to LEO’s using revolvers, because by their logic a well trained police officer should never need more than six rounds to get the job done.
Tyrants need criminals in order to scare the people into giving up their freedoms.
I wonder when the governor plans his next public appearance.
I would like to see how the general public reacts.
Applause,rotten fruit,or worse.
And better odds for would be tyrannical dictators Which is the real motives behind all this.
I am now officially a criminal
Hey Cuomo - go ask Mexico how gun control is working for them...
Gun shop proprietors in surrounding states are smiling.
I wonder how many "criminals" Cuomo just added with this new law. My guess is less than half of those weapons will be registered, even among those who are not felons or otherwise barred from owning firearms. I hope the numbers are FAR less. Some laws should be resisted - and refusal to obey is only one of the options for resisting this sort of grab for power. A secodn one is litigation, and I hope tens of thousands of New Yorkers will file lawsuits. This is clearly unconstitutional, and it needs to bog the system down until those in power admit that they overreached. Wealthy, productive, tax-paying New Yorkers could also leave, voting with their feet and their dollars. There are other options as well, but I will leave them to the imagination.
Our condolences, New Yorker.
There is land and jobs to be had in Texas.
Come. You have proven worthy.
Eejit.
Does that mean that Cuomo won’t be walking around with those armed guards anymore..I mean after all, guns are “evil” right Andrew..so that means you shouldnt have armed guards..perhaps they can guard you with twinkies
I wonder if that is constitutional. I hope the NRA challenges the legality of some portions of this law.
IDIOTS.....Canada TRIED to have a gun registration for at least TEN years and finally GAVE up.....NO ONE would register all their guns.....they really think we are THIS stupid?
The proper response to this piece of tyranny is “No,” but that message must be delivered by large numbers of people around the Capitol and the governor. If people just don’t register their long guns, then the authorities have achieved a dream of criminalizing a large number of law abiding citizens and can arrest them at any time.
We hear some talk of Seccession but are not THESE
states breaking with the constitution by the nature
of their actions? They are in fact leaving the US.
Just something to consider.
Take three rounds out of that seven round magazine.
I need to bury some magazines in my walls, that a lot of Sheetrock work I don’t have time for at present.
Oh yay,,so per Cuomo’s logic all children in school are safe and we should expect a decrease in gun crime? What EXACTLY are these measures supposed to do?
The Shotgun Fudds in Upstate are in for an unpleasant surprise.
How will they measure success?
I wonder if they specified length of cartridge. I.E. If you have a shotgun that holds seven 3" shells, that same shotgun can hold 12 of these 1-3/4" "Minishells":
Aguila Minishell Ammunition 12 Gauge 1-3/4" #4 and #1 Buckshot 11 Pellets Box of 20 (Midway USA)
As dishonest as anti-gunners are, you KNOW if the shell length isn't specified, they'll jam shotguns full of these tiny shells, and promptly declare them illegal "assault weapons".
I heard Cuomo talk today about this travesty. I almost vomited. This state is no longer tolerable. The first job I find in a free state I am moving. I have resigned myself to take up to a 50% pay cut to leave. NY is making me physically ill.
we did have a 5 yr. exit plan. May have to rethink that very soon
I wonder who in NY is going to be stupid enough to register their defense weapons with this Nazi?
There won’t be one fewer murder in New York City this year when compared to last year.
But the liberals (both democrat and republican) will feel all warm and fuzzy inside!
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has the blood of his constituents on his hands.
What a disgusting POS.
Nope, they didn’t. Read the whole thing. It didn’t specify how many rounds of what, or even that it be the round intended for the mag, just that it could hold more than 7.
Likewise, short shells in lever action rifles could also be used.
Better make that 5 month (week would be better) and send your affected arms out of state until you can. Got anyone that doesn’t like you and knows you have firearms? All they’ll have to do is drop a dime.
Extrapolate from there.
Start the lawsuits.
Talk about jumping the gun. How many months passed after it was clear that the US government was gun running to Mexican drug cartels before anything was done?
Congratulations, Governor. Now, how are you gonna get them?
Anyone Know when this new law goes into effect ?
What is a lawful gun owner?
I think we need to get away from that terminology since anyone who is not committing a crime at the time is by definition lawful.
IMO, opening up the "lawful" meme invites speculation to a "Minority Report" scenario....especially when it comes to "mental health" issues.
Indian Reservations sell cigarettes avoiding some tax issues. Maybe they should look into selling ammunition too.
This bill was brought up for vote in the Senate at 11:00 at night under cover of darkness. Ignoring a mandatory three day commentary period, they voted in this travesty in 20 minutes. The Assembly voted today, again ignoring the three day commentary. Cuomo signed it into law this afternoon. In all this thing was jammed through both houses and signed in less than 24 hours. This is what passes for democracy in neeorkistan. sd
Series??
NO snark intended, but series??
