“MBPD is an industry standard for thousand Barrels per Day

MMBPD is the standard for Million Barrels per Day

also MSCFD is thousand Standard Cubic Feet of Gas per Day,

MMSCFD is Million Standard Cubic Feet of Gas per Day

They come from the old Roman numeral system

M = a thousand

MM = a thousand thousands = a million”

I went from the oil business using the terms you summarized above, to other businesses using “K” for thousand.

I worked with several petroleum engineers and geologists, many with masters degrees, and they were one smart bunch of guys.

I still use them as a sense of tradition. And if someone asks about it, then we get to bump the thread again.

In Roman numerals, Italian and French (Roman) "mille" means thousand. Hence the "M" in engineering usages, oil & gas industries, etc.

However K usage derives from this--

The kilo prefix is derived from the Greek word χίλιοι (chilioi), meaning "thousand".

It was originally adopted by Antoine Lavoisier's group in 1795, and introduced into the metric system in France with its establishment in 1799.

Both M and K have sound bases, so what matter is consistent, understood usages.

So for intelligent people, it pays to know Roman and Greek !!

Since English is becoming the international language for business, commerce, air travel, etc. Perhaps we should introduc "T" for thousand, tausend, etc.
