"(The record-setting temperature of 50.7 set in 1960 has, thankfully, still not been broken.)"
The scare stuff is based on the usual AGW culprit, computer modeling.
I almost went to the currently hottest area in the early 1960s to mine for gem opal. One of the major reasons I didn't was because of temperature reports in the area of around 120F. and higher. There's a reason the opal diggers at Coober Pedy (Aboriginal for "white man in a hole") live in cool underground houses.
To add a little color (pun): The second highest temperature ever recorded on earth was in Death Valley, CA USA, at 134 deg F (57 deg C) in the 1920s. First place was in the Libya desert. (From Wiki)
(I suppose none of these begin to compare with The Lake of Fire, described in Revelation, for Satan, his angels, and liberal/sodomites.)
