Armed security is costly. A far better way is to allow all school staff to pack heat.

“A far better way is to allow all school staff to pack heat”.

I am afraid that I disagree with the “all” statement. I personally feel a person must be trained not only when/how to shoot but be confident in those skills. Meaning that they won’t freeze. There are a lot of teachers I experienced through the years that are either on medication or just not “with it” enough to handle this responsibility. However, if a teacher was willing to take a gun class and everything else checked out.. I’d have no problem with it.

Armed Security is necessary. There are a lot of teachers who would not be willing to, or capable of, arming themselves and effectively warding off perpetrators of evil. Better to pay a few more dollars to keep the children safe. There is enough fat in the budget that we can find a way to pay for this.

I've shot in competition against a lot of cops, and brother, I'd rather have a teacher or staff member who shoots as a hobby, and shoots a lot for the pleasure, and is invested in the school and who knows the people who should be in that school... rather than hired security who can claim none of that.

Plus I routinely beat the snot out of those cops. I'm sure there are many who can shoot well... but for them, it's a job.

I consider that to be a rather foolish statement. It presumes the staff capable of maintaining and more importantly using a weapon. The cost of one armed sworn officer can be paid for by making minor staff reductions. The assistant public relations person, the third level coach, the teacher’s assistant assistant, the second vice principal and on and on can be eliminated.

There will never be federal funds for security. That is the task of the local school boards. Those must make the decision that real security outweighs the political delusion of peace and light.

I rather be taxed for armed guards in schools than section 8 rent and EBT cards!

Agreed not to mention both sides of the issue are being driven by irrational panic over something that has happened in a tiny fraction of a percent of American schools.

I was thrilled when our local school refused to cower in the face of the surge in threats last week. They said they wouldn't be rewarding bad behavior and would be in session as normal. At least a few teachers have a gun at hand whether its legal or not and everybody knows it.

Better to keep potential threats guessing.

Considering the fact that, generally, the teachers are actually not in the job “for the children”, but for their own self interests, I’m not sure this is a good idea. If a shooter showed up, they’d be like George Costanza at the birthday party fire — pushing the kids out of the way to escape.

I’d be more comfortable with students who’ve been NRA-certified, and ROTC members, being armed. I’d trust them more to make level-headed decisions and do the right thing.

Even better... get the kids out of public schools and either home-school or send to private schools.

Holy smokes. You would want to allow Erik Loomis, Ward Churchill, and the dingbats at Seattle Central Community College to carry firearms?

Armed security is costly. A far better way is to allow all school staff to pack heat...

Consider this twist:

Armed security is intrusive. I'd like to see "Armed Security" teachers. This individual within a school could teach a class on 2nd amendment; for upper grades, there could be an elective for learning to handle a weapon.

Oh, and for those teachers inclined to do so (ie, liberty minded... believers in the 2nd from any political persuasion), get trained, licensed, outfitted for concealed carry).

The result would be no "Armed Security" whose union job would be to hang around eating donuts all day for that one chance every year where one nutjob wantonly kills somewhere in the US; some guy who would just be hanging out at the water cooler or staff cafeteria all day.
