Morsi decree catches aides off guard

The decree that expanded President Mohamed Morsi’s powers and plunged Egypt into crisis came as a shock to some of his team; a step with huge legal ramifications, it appeared to have caught even his justice minister off guard.

The surprise move on Nov. 22 has fueled debate on how far the Muslim Brotherhood is dictating policy and ignoring cabinet members and others in an administration that Morsi presents as being inclusive of Egypt’s political forces and not dominated by the Islamist party whose electoral muscle put him in office.

Signs that Morsi failed to consult those formally appointed as his advisers on a decree that has set off countrywide protests and violence have given ammunition to critics.

These paint a picture of a man with autocratic impulses who either heeds only his own counsel or, what is more troubling to many, is in thrall to old friends in the Brotherhood, a movement long banned by the old regime and which many Egyptians still view with suspicion.

That is the very perception he has been trying to fight since he came to office, when the Brotherhood pledged to free Morsi of partisan pressure and he himself promised to be a president for all and to build a broad-based presidential administration. Much of that work has been undone.

“There is a lot obscurity linked to how decisions are taken in the presidency,” said Nabil Abdel Fattah, a political scientist. “There is a certain party that is taking this decision,” he said. “And the most likely answer is that it is members of the Muslim Brotherhood.”

At least two of Morsi’s advisers have resigned in the days since he issued a decree opponents see as a major threat to the country’s nascent democracy...

Morsi dropped his mask very quickly, it seems.

Tom Perry’s coverage of Egypt and Morsi has been picked up by Reuters (still no bio though).

I have no sympathy for IslamoLiberals – neither liberalists nor Islamists, whose willful ignorance of history (see Ernst Röhm and Stalin's purges) shocks them, shocks them I say, to discover that the tyranny they supported might actually throw them under the bus when they're deemed no longer useful.

You own the despotism, fools

zero has always been the great emboldener.

EVERY faction against the united States went into overdrive the day zero was installed.

We saw all the signs and did our best to warn the world.

This last "election" tells me .. America is done ... just a matter of time before the flag is changed and a ton of et cetera's

I think about 1/2 of America is ready to go to the mattresses against Obama and his idiot followers.

Whether we secede or fight back is the next question. That said, it is apparent that the inside the Beltway crowd just doesn't get it. They are perfectly willing to let Obama steal the election.

And the military surely must see that Obama is stealing the country against its will and against it laws.

I would have hoped they might try and right this wrong.

Yeah .. the military is something I admit I don't understand.

I didn't go in country, but I came back from Viet Nam era in '67 ... pissed off for what I knew and guys I'd lost and happy that a subculture provided drugs and sex.

Years later I started putting one and one together and ultimately landed in Jim's living room.

Now I'm too old and falling apart, of not much use to anyone anymore, but with the same anger against a political structure that is too clever for the average user and too tough for the milquitoast.

I don't know of any military suicides but the occasional report says they're up in numbers. If true, I suspect warriors are coming home and finding themselves in a corner or helpless against their sense of patriotism and inability to act on it ... much like the ROE they were subject to in the ME.

It's a mess

My view is Obama's sponsors bought him the election. A fair chunk of the money came from us, I had to listen to Planned Parenthood commercials every 10 minutes lying about Romney on the country music station. His large GOTV took money too. I have lots of anecdotal evidence that the stupid people bought into the barrage of anti-Romney ads. I don't see how the 60-40 Romney vote in my county could include pro-Obama fraud or a hacked voting system. We just didn't get the numbers we needed.

Looking around the rest of Virginia I saw that about 50% of voting age rural whites went to the polls in a coal county motivated against Obama whereas 60% of voting age blacks went to the polls (based on Petersburg City demographics) and some precincts in Richmond were 99% Obama. We were outgunned in ad money and failed to GOTV.

I forgot I wanted to answer this. Based on the apathy and ignorance I saw around my county there won't be 1/2 of America ready to do this. But that said, it takes a lot less than 1/2 to get something done if they are motivated and smart.

Let’s see. Morsi issues decrees to bypass the legislature and judiciary. The Unemployment and Food Stamp President issues executive orders to bypass the legislature and judiciary. Hmmmm, which is run by a third world country dictator?
