No sex? Permission to speak freely, Sir. (West Point memoir by Laura Cannon)
Washington Post ^ | 11-23-12 | Laura Cannon

Posted on 11/26/2012 6:11:33 PM PST by dynachrome

What would I do if I were in charge? I’d abolish General Order No. 1. Keep the rules that protect soldiers from sexual harassment. But allow deployed officers and troops to have sex while at war. West Point should come to its senses as well.

West Pointers and other military service members endure tremendous sacrifices. We appreciate the adoration and respect we receive. In that same spirit, I ask the public to accept and forgive our weaknesses. It’s okay to be disappointed, but please don’t be misled. Beneath the heavy combat gear and impressive uniform, we’re human, just like you.

Something really, really bad is coming to this country . It is out there moving through the dark. We just don't know we are on a rendezvous path with it. Fools like this dishonor the Army, the USMA, and all those who have gone before in the ‘Long Grey Line’. Does this sorry person not remember the words to the alumni song.

But when it comes down to no BS killing - that is a man's job. And so long as women are near a fighting man in a combat zone, most of the men will view her job as legs in the air......unless it is strictly clerical or a nurses corps there is no place in the military for women.

Agree completely.

In times past a very few women DID fight alongside men (Revolutionary War, Civil War) but only AFTER they had gone to great lengths to hide their sex -- not flaunt it.

It just amazes me that people will write this stuff and put their name to it - she apparently actually thinks this makes sense.

On one hand, women are fine in support positions.Somewhere in the rear lines.
When a man is in a combat situation it is not a good idea to have women around. Not because some woman would not, or could not, do the job but because men have a hardwired response to "save the woman" that might interfere with combat duties.

On the other hand, it is not reasonable to expect a man to be deprived of female company when not in a combat situation for, literally, years while in the military.
I know that some men do, voluntarily, refrain from active participation in fraternizing with any women while on active military duty.
My hat is doffed to them.

That doesn't mean that all men should be subjected to stiffness of the, ahhh, neck while in the military.

Especially when Officers and staff NCO’s have sex with Jr. enlisted. I mean what could go wrong there? Apparently this clown never heard of the saying, that you don't crap where you eat.

The military man's job is not to be a policeman, or a nation builder, or to look good in a skirt. It is to seek out, close with, and destroy the enemy. It is to outsmart and out pace so that he can kill the enemy in the most effective manner possible. It is to demoralize and destroy.

Conan, what is best in life?

Agreed. And the men are therefore distracted from their mission. You can't escape the male/female thing. When they're together they're attracted to one another.

I knew having women at West Point was a bad idea from the get-go. This "article" is proof positive that this woman certainly didn't learn anything from all those "rules". I guess rules are for other people.

It becomes more apparent to me each day that I have become a social dinosaur. Flame away - I'd be interested in your comments. But rest assured you will not change my opinion.

Up to now the PC logic was that Soldiers were supposed to be so professional that they would be robots and not act on any attraction to the other sex. Guess now she’s saying “Yeah that’s BS, but who cares let us hump away like it’s a real life episode of MASH.” Please don’t let her be a graduate of my Company. Oh, and take your saying Jesus obsession and shame of being an unmarried virgin and stick it where the son don’t shine.

“Especially when Officers and staff NCO’s have sex with Jr. enlisted. I mean what could go wrong there? “

The same thing that happens today, degradation of moral and discipline.

It goes on today.

I should probably add to this that I have no problem if a married couple is deployed together to a big support base letting them live together.

I read Heinlein’s Starship Troopers too.

Boy, the Academy was not much fun until I met Mary Beth at Ladycliff outside the gates. One time we got caught by the Mother Superior in her office late on a Saturday night. We made our escape while she went for penguin reinforcements.

My philosophy is “More freedom, not less”.

Seriously, I was a unit commander. The troops need the emotional release. If I had my way, there would be a grog ration in the MRE as well.
