It will take at least 6 months to get new 500kV/230kV transformers from China as they are not made here anymore. That is not a true statement. Large power transformers are still made in the US. Mexico is the significant competition in this market, not China.

In an urban vs rural civil war, where cutting off electrical power was one tactic, rifle bullets would be cheaper and more plentiful than transformers.

If you're right then there's really no problem but this recent study doesn't instill a lot of confidence in domestic production, especially in a national emergency. 34% of our large power transformer imports are apparently Korean.
