Even if we don’t win many votes, we have to campaign in some urban areas. It’s the decent thing to do: ask people to vote for you. Whether or not that would have done the trick this time out, it’d be good in 2012. Plus, when you’re in a district that voted 100 percent for Obama, see if you find a local who will come forward and say he voted Republican this year. Stealing votes is very bad, you know. Corruption, crime, bad schools,no fathers, neighborhoods falling apart, nobody should have to have to put up with that stuff just because the color of their skin means their vote is taken for granted or even stolen.

It’s very important to appear in these areas and the GOP is very bad about it. As far back as the 2000 election, I was working the phones at the campaign headquarters in a mostly Dem district, and we got a call from a black man who said he had to hide the fact that he was calling us, but he would like us to come and at least distribute door hangers in his neighborhood because he thought that a couple of people might be interested, and also it wouldn’t look as if the GOP was writing them off and didn’t even want their votes. Needless to say, the GOP leaders never sent anybody and wouldn’t even let a couple of us who volunteered go out and do it.

Any wonder that we lose that vote?
