“This season of Christmas has been celebrated as such since this nation was founded.”

IIRC, the Pilgrims were very anti-Christmas. They were anti-Catholic, objected to the “...mas” (mass), and looked on the holiday as pagan. They “loosened up” after a few decades.

That may be true in Pilgrim land, but Maryland was founded by Catholics, and the Swedes were in Pa. before William Penn....
